Is Biking Good for Knee Pain? Why Peloton May Aggravate Your Knee — And How to Fix It

If you’ve been told that cycling is good for knee pain — but your knee hurts after a Peloton workout — you’re not alone.

Many people tolerate five minutes on a stationary bike during physical therapy.

But when they try a full cycling class at home, their knee becomes sore, stiff, or swollen.

So what’s happening?

• Is biking bad for your knees?

• Do Peloton spin classes damage knee cartilage?

• Or is something else going on?

The real answer lies in understanding something called Load Tolerance — the amount of force your knees can handle without producing pain, swelling, or stiffness.

Cycling places compression and force through your knee joint.

When that force matches your knee’s current capacity, it can build or maintain strength.

When it exceeds that capacity, symptoms appear.

Understanding Load Tolerance changes how you interpret knee pain — and how you decide what to do next.

Is Biking Good for Knee Pain?

Stationary biking is often recommended for knee pain (1) because:

• It is low impact.

• It increases thigh muscle endurance (quadriceps).

• It applies controlled compression to knee cartilage.

• It promotes circulation of synovial fluid.

But “low impact” does not mean “low load.”

Resistance, cadence, duration, and frequency all affect how much force your knee experiences.

If that force exceeds your knee’s current tolerance, knee pain after cycling can occur.

How Cycling Affects Your Knee Joint

When you’re cycling – indoors or outdoors – your feet press on the bike pedals.

The pressure you place on the pedals also creates compression inside your knee joint.

Cycling Creates Compression Inside the Knee

That compression “squishes”:

• Articular cartilage

• Synovial fluid

Compression is not necessarily harmful.

In fact, it is necessary for maintaining healthy cartilage — when applied appropriately. (2,3)

The key is matching compression to your knee’s current capacity. (4)

Why Peloton Workouts Can Cause Knee Pain

Many people report:

“The bike at PT feels fine… but Peloton aggravates my knee.”

This is usually not a bike setup issue.

It is a Load Tolerance issue.

This comes back to one key factor—your knee’s Load Tolerance.

I explain this in detail here

Peloton workouts combine multiple variables:

• Sustained duration

• Variable resistance

• Standing climbs

• Speed intervals

Each of these increases the total amount of joint compression.

When several variables increase at once, your knee may not adapt quickly enough — especially if you’ve had knee pain or reduced your activity recently.

This is why Peloton knee pain is common when exercise progression is not structured.

Understanding Load Tolerance and Knee Pain

Load Tolerance describes how much force your knee joint can handle without producing:

• Pain

• Swelling

• Stiffness

• Lingering soreness

Most upright activities — including cycling — places force on your knees.

The key question is not whether biking is good or bad.

The key question is whether the force matches your knee’s current capacity.

The Four Ways Force Affects Your Knees

There are only four possible outcomes when force is applied to your knee:

1. Too little force → knees weaken.

 (Extended rest, inactivity)

2. Too much force → knees flare and more symptoms occur.

(High resistance, long duration, increased frequency)

3. Adequate force → knees maintain strength.

4. Gradually increasing force → knees get stronger.

Cycling itself is not the problem.

Unstructured progression is.

When force exceeds your knee’s Load Tolerance, symptoms appear.

When force stays within tolerance — and increases gradually — strength improves.

That’s the principle behind Inside Out Knee Health.

How to Strengthen Your Knees With Cycling

If Peloton hurts your knee, do not quit cycling.

Instead, adjust your progression.

Step 1 – Identify Your Cycling Tolerance

Find a duration, resistance, and cadence that feel neutral.

Neutral means:

• No pain during

• No increased stiffness or swelling after

This might be:

• 10 minutes

• Low resistance

• Steady cadence

That is not a failure.

It is your starting point.

Step 2 – Establish a Baseline

Cycle three times per week on non-consecutive days.

Use a duration and resistance that is consistent with your cycling tolerance (determined in Step 1).

Continue this for two weeks.

If symptoms appear:

• Soothe your knees.

• Decrease one variable, like the duration.

• Repeat the two week program.

This is where most people ignore symptoms and skip ahead.

But finding your symptom-free baseline is the foundation for future success.

Step 3 – Progress One Variable at a Time

When you're able to complete the two weeks without any aggravation in knee symptoms, choose to either increase your cycling duration by 10–20%.

Or increase your cycling resistance slightly.

Not both.

Then, repeat the two week program.

The 36-Hour Rule

If knee symptoms:

• do not occur → continue progressing.

• resolve within 36 hours → hold steady.

• persist longer than 36 hours → reduce progression.

This is how knees build strength safely.

How Long Should Knee Soreness Last After Cycling?

Mild soreness that resolves within 24–36 hours can be acceptable during strengthening.

Symptoms that last longer than 36 hours suggest the load was too aggressive.

Persistent swelling or stiffness indicates your knee needs reduced intensity — not complete avoidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can cycling damage knee cartilage?

Cycling does not damage healthy cartilage when progressed appropriately.

Controlled joint compression supports cartilage health. Problems arise when force exceeds tolerance.

Why does my knee hurt after Peloton but not during physical therapy?

Physical therapy cycling is usually low intensity and short duration.

Peloton workouts often combine resistance changes, speed intervals, and longer duration — exceeding load tolerance.

Should I stop cycling if my knee hurts?

Not necessarily. Reduce duration or resistance and rebuild gradually.

Avoiding all force can weaken the knee further.

Is a stationary bike better than outdoor cycling for knee pain?

Stationary bikes allow easier control of resistance and cadence, making them ideal for rebuilding cycling tolerance in early stages.

The Bottom Line

Biking is not automatically good or bad for knee pain.

The dosage determines the outcome.

When force matches capacity — and increases gradually — your knees get stronger.

That’s how people return to:

• Peloton

• Hiking

• Running

• Skiing

• Pickleball

Not by avoiding force.

Not with overwhelming force.

But by applying the right amount of force at the right time.
